Nature’s Muse: Sketching Outdoors vs. In the Studio

Hey friends ♡

I hope you’re all doing wonderfully! As the days grow shorter and the leaves transform into a tapestry of colours, I’m embracing this beautiful season more than ever. Have you treated yourself to any delicious flavoured hot drinks yet? There’s nothing like a warm spiced latte to chase away the chill! And speaking of cosy vibes, I’ve finally started watching Gilmore Girls — I can’t believe I waited so long!

As I soak in the gorgeous sights of autumn, I can’t help but reflect on how much nature influences my art. This season, with its vibrant colours and textures, truly gets my creativity flowing in a way that no other time of year does. What are you all enjoying about this wonderful season?

This month, I also embarked on an immersive sensory adventure called Viola’s Room. Picture this: walking barefoot, wearing headphones, and following the light through a labyrinthine installation while a captivating narrator unveils a story. It definitely got me in the Halloween spirit! Plus, I cherished moments with my family baking cookies and transforming them into delightful spooky characters.

One lovely morning, I visited the Wallace Collection in London—a serene treasure tucked away from the hustle and bustle. I have such fond memories of this museum from my days working in the city, often retreating to its quiet beauty during the chilly months when outdoor walks felt uninviting. This time, I brought my sketchbook to capture the beauty I had long admired.

As I strolled from Bond Street to the Wallace Collection, the sunlight peeked through the branches, casting a warm glow on the leaves. I took a moment to soak it all in—the gentle rustle of leaves beneath my feet, the earthy scent of the ground and trees, and the stunning colours all around me.

The Wallace Collection is filled with stunning paintings, antique objects, and sculptures. The collection of arms and armour is especially impressive! There's so much to see that one visit will never be enough.

Sketching outdoors offers a unique energy that’s hard to replicate in my studio. Being in a different environment lets me immerse myself in various colour palettes, textures, and forms. Plus, I’m always aware of the curious onlookers glancing at my sketchbook, which adds an exciting dynamic. I can easily move to capture something else that inspires me, fueling my creativity freshly and spontaneously.

In contrast, my desk provides a cosy comfort, a space where I can focus deeply and experiment without distractions. Here, all my materials are at my fingertips, allowing me to take my time refining my ideas. This controlled environment lets me plan and layer details in ways that might be trickier outdoors.

Ultimately, both environments enrich my artistic practice. Sketching outdoors connects me with the beauty of the moment, while my desk offers a sanctuary for deeper exploration. Each setting has its own charm, but exploring new places truly sparks my creativity.

Is there a museum or a special spot that inspires you to think differently? Somewhere that helps you step outside your thoughts and ignites your creativity?

I’m not quite sure what to call my space; the fancier term would be "studio," but it’s really just a desk in my room. I’d love to separate the two, but space is limited at the moment!

Before I wrap up this post, I must share some of my favourite spooky, Halloween-inspired goodies from my Etsy shop! I’ve been a bit slow in showcasing what I have for sale lately, and it’s such a shame because these creations, which I crafted a few years back, turned out so cute! They definitely deserve more love, and I think you’ll find them perfect for adding cosy vibes to your Halloween celebrations. Take a peek and let me know what you think!

One of my favourite quotes this month comes from the wonderful Sabina Laura:

“I try to catch the colours falling in autumn. Longing to repaint my world in shades of change.

But I must be patient like the seasons, because good things come to those who wait.” 🍂

Isn’t that just a perfect reminder to embrace the beauty around us and trust the process?

Thank you all for joining me on this creative journey! I’d love to hear how you’re celebrating Halloween — are you crafting spooky art, dressing up, or indulging in sweet treats? And a big shoutout to those celebrating Diwali —wishing you a festival filled with light and joy!

Till next month

With love and creativity,
Janki x
